Good Neighbor Spotlight: Barnstable and Falmouth Scholarship Committees

The Barnstable and Falmouth real estate scholarship committees are passionate about creating opportunities for those who live in their communities. Continuing a long tradition of supporting local high school seniors as they head off to college, both scholarship committees raised $5,000 (for a total of $10,000 between them) to support a total of eight deserving high school seniors as they attend the colleges of their choice.

The scholarship committees have been making donations towards their respective scholarships for 20 years, with 2020 being one of their most productive years for giving, even in the midst of COVID-19. The bulk of these donations are received during MLS tours, which are headed by Paula Power-Spirlet of Stonewater Real Estate in Barnstable, and Pam Chmielinski of Sotheby's International Real Estate in Falmouth.

"This year we were able to give three scholarships to high school seniors that reside in the town of Barnstable," notes Power-Spirlet. "I am very grateful to all of the local REALTORS®, especially committee members, who contributed not only money but their time, energy and knowledge to make this a success during this very difficult year."

Says Mrs Chmielinski:

"We, the committee members of the scholarship in Falmouth did not want to disappoint the seniors this year so we made a plea to all agents to donate what they could. Also, additional donations from The Police Patrol Federation, Meryl Watson from Cape Cod Five Bank and donations in memory of Gene Marchand who was one of the founding members added to our goal. We will continue to offer the five scholarships each year to five finalists who are graduating to help them with some college expenses."
